While poison treatment service is provided by all public hospitals, the Poison Treatment Centre functions as the tertiary referral centre especially for patients with unusual poisoning. The Poison Treatment Centre at Prince of Wales Hospital (PWHPTC) was jointly established in 2005 by the Hospital Authority and the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. PWHPTC is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses led by consultant physicians (clinical toxicologists) to manage in-patients and out-patients with acute and chronic poisoning and other toxicological problems.
It adopts a systematised approach to ensure the quality of clinical service. The centre is staffed and equipped to provide clinical assessment, supportive as well as specific care for patients with poisoning including those requiring sophisticated poisoning treatment. It also provides expert information and consultative services on the management of poisoning. PWHPTC is an accredited training centre for Clinical Toxicology under the Hong Kong College of Physicians. It provides general as well as specialist training in clinical toxicology for healthcare professionals.
